Australia Limits Student Visas from Key Indian States Amid Immigration Crackdown

Visa Restrictions Affect Key Indian Regions

Australia has introduced new student visa restrictions impacting applicants from six major Indian states — Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh (UP), Uttarakhand, and Jammu & Kashmir. Several universities, including Federation University, Western Sydney University, Victoria University, and Southern Cross University, have paused or limited applications from these regions.

Crackdown on Student Visa Misuse

This move is part of a broader effort by the Australian government to address the rising misuse of the student visa route. The changes align with similar trends in Canada and the United States, where tighter immigration policies are also affecting Indian students.

Impact on Indian Students and Consultants

Experts in foreign education consulting reveal that the decision has caused concern among students, particularly in Gujarat, where Australia ranks among the top three destinations for international studies. According to education consultants, around 20% of students from Gujarat opt for Australia. These restrictions may now reduce that figure significantly.

“This development has reduced the opportunities for many deserving students. If out of 100 students, 20 are affected directly, that’s a big hit,” said Bhavin Thaker, a reputed visa consultant.

Concerns About Blanket Restrictions

Visa experts have criticized the broad approach taken by the universities.

“Most students from these states are genuine applicants with strong academic records and a clear purpose. These blanket bans only add confusion and stress,” said Lalit Advani, another visa consultant.

Tighter Global Immigration Norms Shrink Study Abroad Options

The timing of these visa changes is critical, as global demand for international education is soaring among Indian students. With Canada, the US, and now Australia tightening rules, and the UK reconsidering post-study work policies, Indian students are facing limited overseas education options.

Australian Government Clarifies Its Position

In response to growing speculation, the Australian High Commission in New Delhi denied the existence of an official ban.

“Claims of a ban on student applications from specific Indian states are inaccurate. Over 125,000 Indian students are currently studying in Australia, making them the second-largest international student group. Australia continues to process Indian student visa applications fairly and values its strong education partnership with India,” said a High Commission spokesperson.
