Yamuna Swells After Heavy Rainfall

Following continuous heavy rains in northern India, the Yamuna River at the Hathnikund barrage in Yamunanagar surged to 1.78 lakh cusecs on Sunday. Authorities have issued a medium flood alert for districts in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi. All 18 floodgates of the barrage have been opened to manage the rising water levels.

Record Water Flow This Monsoon

Officials confirmed this is the highest water flow recorded this monsoon season. According to the Irrigation and Water Resources Department:

  • Low flood: 70,000 to 1.5 lakh cusecs

  • Medium flood: 1.5 lakh to 2.5 lakh cusecs

  • High flood: Above 2.5 lakh cusecs

One cusec equals 28.32 litres per second. Water levels began rising around 7 am, reaching 1 lakh cusecs by 1 pm, and peaked at 1.78 lakh cusecs by 3 pm.

Areas Likely to Be Affected

Low-lying regions in Yamunanagar, Karnal, Panipat, and Sonepat are at risk. Water is expected to reach Delhi within 48 hours, according to the Central Water Commission (CWC). Residents are advised to stay alert and monitor official updates.

Rivers Overflow Sparks Concerns

Heavy rains also caused the Som River to overflow in Dhanaura village, with water crossing 24,000 cusecs, more than twice the danger mark of 10,000 cusecs. While water levels of the Som and Pathrala rivers have started to recede, waterlogging remains a problem in nearby villages.

Authorities Take Precautionary Measures

Vyaspur officials, including Sub-Divisional Magistrate Jaspal Singh Gill and DSP Harvindra Singh, conducted field inspections along the Nakti and Som rivers in Sadhaura and Vyaspur.

Embankments have been strengthened in vulnerable villages like Ranjitpur, Ranipur, Bhamanoli, Chintpur, Khanuwala, and Malikpur Bangar. Continuous monitoring is underway in sensitive areas such as Khanuwala, Chintpur, and Manipur.

Rainfall Statistics in Affected Districts

  • Pratap Nagar: 99mm

  • Chhachrauli: 50mm

  • Sadhaura: 48mm

  • Saraswati Nagar: 40mm

Officials urge residents to stay vigilant and follow safety instructions to avoid accidents and damage.
